Evolution is dependent on mutation and causes natural selection. Justin Ponmany transfers this mechanism in his work onto the urban expansion of the Indian megacity Mumbai. Focusing on individual reception and processes of upheaval instead of the outer macro-perspective, Ponmany creates multidimensional portraits that appear ambiguous, not only concerning their angle of vision but also regarding the object in question: "I am looking at a person and his world within the same frame. The idea is how to co-wire a human being's individuality and the world around him within the same frame."

At the center of this exploration, the dynamic framework of modern city life, to which both human and environment are subjected, is thereby established time and again. Survival and advancement are, as with Darwin, ever dependent on positioning and the ability to adapt vis-à-vis the competition. The continual renewal and overhaul of old structures lead to a constant overflow of impulse, which characterizes present-day big cities. Ponmany alludes foremost to the digitalization of society and its effect on human perception. Plasticity and physicality play a critical role, as they display the diversity of materials he uses in his works.
