”Trust the medium, control the message“, states Scaria; a suitable characterization of his episteme and mode of working.
Scaria uses careful precision to reassemble the real and the imaginary, the political and the poetical as well as the urban andthe anthropological in his works. The dialogic moment is foregrounded and establishes an in-between position that
marks out a space in which deeply rooted contrasts can be overcome. Conversation is his artistic method; leading a constant dialogue, Scaria portrays people recollecting personal memories of Gandhi or earning their living by collecting garbage from the streets; he debates with his artist colleagues about his works and thoughts; he intentionally disrupts his work day with books and films to provide a space for mediation; and from time to time he is in conversation with himself.
Gigi Scaria thus revisits and refers to the dialogic tradition of Indian philosophy. The translation of the Sanskrit ”upanishads“ reads: ”to sit at the feet of the master“.
This is
exactly where Scaria positions himself; he sits at the feet
of the Indian cities and their inhabitants, to observe and to listen and to engage in a dialogue.
