Agus Suwage, one of the icons of contemporary art in Indonesia, deals with the genre of the portrait and self-portrait in his work. The portrait reflects the belief that art may not have the power to change the present global state but every work of art can however help to open new individual perspectives. The emancipated woman and especially the artist Frida Kahlo are in the focus of Suwage’s works in the exhibition. Kahlo is depicted to represent the oppression of women in Indonesia as a kind of martyr, while Suwage also uses the Christian iconography of Saint Sebastian tied to a tree pierced by arrows.
